Texters form group vs. free text cutbacks, telecom monopolies

Young mobile phone users who helped oust President Estrada have a new target: the big telecommunication companies whom they call “profiteers”.

“We feel disempowered and cheated at the same time. Disempowered because they are actually putting a high price on using text messaging that has become a tool for communication and social change. Cheated because Globe and Smart are issuing outrageous statements to back up the scheduled reduction in free text allocations,” said Anthony Ian Cruz, spokesperson of TXTPOWER.

“Just like in the oust-Erap campaign, its again time for texters to come together and fight greed. Monopolists like Globe and Smart should watch out,” said Cruz.

Cruz said that TXTPOWER will come out in the open on Monday, Aug. 27, 11:00 am in a press conference at Popular Bookstore, Timog Avenue cor. Morato Street in Quezon City. Convenors include students, members of the academe, professionals and people from the Information and Communication Technology sector.

During the press conference, TXTPOWER convenors will issue a “Texters’ Declaration” that will challenge mobile phone users to compel Globe and Smart to deliver their promises of better services and to stop the scheduled reduction of free text message allocations on Sept. 3. A “National Day of Action” is now in the works.

Cruz said they will also answer claims by Globe and Smart that they are bleeding from losses due to network expansion and will raise anew the rising number of complaints over dropped calls, delayed text message delivery, weak signal strength and other peeves of mobile phone users.

“What we want is to expose the greed for profits of Globe and Smart, how they cheat their subscribers and disrespect our rights as consumers. Millions of mobile phone users have a right to defend themselves against cartels and monopolists who just want to gobble up profits and more profits to the detriment of consumers like us,” Cruz added.
