According to an obscure Smart announcement on its website and a creepy voice recording we hear on our handsets, the country’s meanest cellular provider would start charging P1.00 for each balance inquiry using 1515.

Smart will reap millions, if not billions more, in obscene profits out of balance inquiries by about nine million budget-conscious consumers who availed of the Smart Buddy and Talk ‘N Text services because it was kinda affordable and convenient.

We were all able to at least delay its atrocious reduction in free text and it falls upon our shoulders to stop this new madness from happening. As consumers, we have every right to check the outstanding balance of our prepaid credits at our convenience.

Smart calls this scandalous plan: “One Text Away! Service Enhancement”. We call it highway robbery. The only service enhancements acceptable right now are LOWER CALL RATES AND MORE FREE TEXT!

We urge the National Telecommunications Commission and other concerned government agencies and officials to rescue consumers from this impending catastrophe that will rob consumers of precious pesos in prepaid credit while giving millions more to Smart. (Smart’s net income increased by 74% from P3.5-billion in 2001 to P6.3-billion in 2002. Its revenues went up from P24-billion to P33-billion.)

Texters and cellphone users, unite!
